Guided Bird Watching
Tropical Birds are one of Rio Santiago’s greatest attractions. Our guides and guests have documented over 300 avian species and each year this list continues to grow. With a rich mosaic of primary and secondary forest habitats surrounding the resort, and 280,000 acre Pico Bonito National Park at our backdoor, it is clear why so many choose Rio Santiago as the place to experience tropical birding at its best.
Bird walks begin at La Champa restaurant and follow a short introduction and orientation by our guide. Whether taking advantage of upland forest habitats, or the more plantation and riparian areas of our lower property, the next 2-3 hours will be a great immersion into Honduras amazingly colorful, and diverse avifauna. Parrots and Toucans, Trogons and Tanagers, Hummingbirds and high-flying Raptors, and a bewildering variety of other species wait to be discovered and admired.
This tour is great for both the avid list-keeper and the casual birder. An easy pace allows us to enjoy the spectacular bird watching which has made Rio Santiago and the Pico Bonito area so well known.
Guided birding walks are offered at dawn, and then again at 3:00 PM. We’ve learned that here in Honduras, as in much of the tropics, birding is best during these two peak times of day (and it’s nice to be able to take a siesta in-between).
