Horseback Riding on the BeachFor many of Rio Santiago’s guests, the pleasure of riding a gentle horse along a remote, Caribbean beach is an image of pure paradise. Over the past few years a number of locally based, sustainable tourism projects have been developed along Honduras’ north coast. In the nearby village of El Porvenir, 40 minutes to our east, the community has come together with local guides and horse owners to create a horseback riding experience that is truly enriching for foreign and local visitors alike. After following the shore for a couple kilometers, our path takes us across forest, wetlands and two small rivers. Upon reaching the lower Rio Coloradito, we will dismount for a short break to stretch the legs and refresh ourselves and our horses. Our return route is via the area’s agricultural and rural areas, and ultimately passes an historic French cemetery, testament to this village’s colonial history. Long pants, and closed shoes are a must for this tour, and a hat and sun block are recommended. This tour leaves at 7:00 AM and returns to Rio Santiago by noon. More adventurous, customized trips from the beach to Pico Bonito National Park can be arranged by request.
