Sea Kayaking the Rio ZacateIn contrast to the misty cascades and rain forested slopes of the upper Rio Zacate, this river’s lower delta is a gentle, meandering network of narrow canals which slowly find their way to the sea. Sea kayaking these aquatic trails can be one of the most enjoyable ways to discover this lowland forest environment. Carving clear channels through lush, primary forest, the lower Rio Zacate is easily navigable and thus, a paddler’s dream. Overhanging trees and vines create natural bridge ways where howler and white-faced monkeys abound. As we paddle along, numerous herons, egrets, jacanas and kingfishers are always in view. Brilliant, Blue Morpho butterflies are common sights too, as they flash their colors along these waterways. During this easy going kayak tour we will take our rest at “Finca El Cayo”, a local eco-tourism destination located just 5 minutes from the sea. A short hike to the beach will have us dipping our toes in The Caribbean (weather permitting) and enjoying refreshments before returning to our kayaks, and ultimately, Rio Santiago. This kayak tour leaves Rio Santiago at 7:00 AM and normally returns by 12:00 PM. Kayaks, kayaking gear, and a light snack are provided.
