La Ceiba’s Butterfly and Insect Museum houses an amazing collection of butterflies, beetles and other insects (13,000+ in all). Representing over 30 years of collection and research, its curator is one of La Ceiba’s most well known educators, Mr. Robert Lehman. Almost 10,000 of the species on display are native to Honduras, including the world’s largest moth (with a 30cm wingspan), the most iridescent butterfly, and the one with the longest proboscis.
The remaining species come from over 110 countries, and include the world’s largest scorpion and the world’s heaviest insect. You don’t have to be crazy about insects to appreciate the variety and beauty of the myriad species and specimens.
In the rain forest, many insect species may be difficult to find. However, here at the museum the focus is on discovery and education. Interpretive displays, live specimens, videos, photographs and over 30 years of teaching experience from Mr. Robert Lehman himself all combine to paint a dazzling picture of Honduras’ insect diversity.
A visit to the Butterfly and Insect Museum is a great compliment to a La Ceiba sightseeing tour. |
